When you want to speak to a Twitter member in private, you can use the private message (Direct Message) feature to contact that user for a one-on-one conversation.
Private direct messages will not show up on anyone Twitter home page or public feed. They will only show up within the recipient’s private messages list - and given that they follow you. You cannot send private messages to those who are not following you.
Like a regular Twitter message, the 140-character limit applies to every private message you send. You can send a private message only to a Twitter user who is actively following you; likewise, only a user you are following can send you a private message.
