According to data revealed in an exceedingly new report, YouTube is responsible for 37th of all mobile internet traffic.
The report from Sandvine details that apps generate the most downstream mobile internet traffic within the world.
Traffic is measured in megabytes, that may justify why YouTube has such a commanding lead over different applications.
By comparison, Facebook accounts for only 8.4% of mobile internet traffic.
"YouTube accounts for the most megabytes with 37th, an awfully great distance ahead of second-placed Facebook with 8.4% and Snapchat with 8.3%. Netflix, that accounts for the most web traffic overall, only manages 2.4% once it comes to mobile."
Users are consuming a lot of content (per megabyte) on YouTube than on the other app. This includes social media and other video apps like Netflix.
Another interesting takeaway from this data is that Snapchat accounts for the same amount of mobile traffic as Facebook, despite having several fewer users.
Again, that likely must do with the video-centric nature of Snapchat. once you also think about Facebook video then Facebook starts to pull further ahead of Snapchat.
People clearly enjoy looking at video on their phones , so why is Netflix so far down the list? Well, Netflix content is behind a paywall, therefore that’s a major factor.
However, i think the data says more about the types of video users choose to watch on mobile devices. Short-form video content is king on the mobile internet, whereas full-length movies and shows are better suited for pc and tv screens.
